  1. STRAFE A RAIL CENTER

  3. Eighth Air Force Fighter Command sent 
  4. seven fighter groups to France on August 
  5. 10, 1944, to support the operations in 
  6. Normandy and prevent German ground 
  7. forces from reinforcing their positions.  
  8. The P-38s of the 479th were to hit rail lines 
  9. from Vesoul to Melun.  Light flak was 
  10. popping up everywhere as Col. Kyle 
  11. Riddle led his group to a marshaling yard.  
  12. Riddle's plane was hit in the left wing as 
  13. he flew over the target at low altitude, but 
  14. he was able to belly land his flaming 
  15. Lightning and get out safely.  He then 
  16. watched the rest of his flight wreak havok 
  17. on the installation, with the loss of one 
  18. more P-38 and its pilot.  The 479th was 
  19. credited with the destruction of nine 
  20. locomotives and over 100 rail cars.

  22.                     YOUR MISSION

  24. Lead your flight of P-38Js on a low level 
  25. strafing attack on the Juvisy-sur-Orge rail 
  26. center.  Stay as low as you can safely fly to 
  27. avoid being hit by flak.  When you've 
  28. completed your attack, fly on a heading of 
  29. 330 to rendezvous with P-51s that will 
  30. escort you on your trip home (as you'll 
  31. probably be low on ammunition by then).  
  32. If possible, let the Mustangs engage any 
  33. enemy aircraft you encounter while you 
  34. lead your Lightnings home.
